Spitfire landing
light
(No 67 pg1 Light)
Here is a Spitfire landing light, this
is incredibly rare I cannot even find pictures of this unit
on the internet and the first one I have seen or owned in
over 20 years of collecting and selling.
It appears complete and is in good
original condition. If you enlarge the drawing far right
under you can see that the lamp matches the shape of the one
shown in the drawing.

From what I understand these
were only used in the very early Spitfires as it soon became
obvious the Spitfire was near to useless as a night fighter
as the glow from the exhaust all but blinded the Pilot , it
was fitted to some MK Vs but was deleted.
The main reason is that there
was better use of the space required to house the
retractable lights inside the wings. It is important to
understand that the wing type of the Spitfire is as
important to characterize it as the Mk. number.
In short, there were 4 different wing types, labelled from A
to D.
Losing the landing light can be answered by just looking at
the design of the wing. In early Mk. Spitfires, the A type
wing was mostly used, the one housing 4 machine guns per
wing.
Even though there is a space provision for the landing light
just behind the inner ammo box housings.
In the Spit Mk. Vb the B type wing was used, where the
inner two machine guns are replaced with a housing for the
Hispano cannon and its 60 round ammo drum.
There is still space for it in for of the magazine bay. There, the landing
light was installed in B wing Spitfire Mk.V. The switches to
operate the landing lights were on the lower left side on
the panel.
With the instalment of different wing types, the housing for
the landing light was omitted. You can see those on the C
type wing as installed in the Mk.VIII.
The magazine bay was changed such that it could accommodate
the 120 rounds of the belt fed Hispano MK.II cannon. Or two
ammo boxes for dual cannon installation, such as in
some Mk.V's.
The type nobody wanted and consequently got
shipped away to places like Malta. Spitfires ferried such as
the tropical Mk.V type to Malta aboard the carrier Eagle on
June 9th, 1942.The fuel tank was only fitted in the MK.VIII, but
not in Mk.V or Mk.IX. Thus, no space, no landing lights.
That Pilots were not impressed with the after dark
qualities of the Spitfire can be seen on the D type wing.
Recon Spitfires, featuring a large tank in the front part of
the wing, with all armament removed may in some cases had
landing lights fitted as they often flew in the dark.
In summary the general rule the Mk Vb had landing lights. Other Spitfires
types had to have the (early) A or B wing type installed to
have this feature.
This an Air ministry made part not made by Supermarrine so
most likely it was fitted to other RAF aircraft although it
differs considerably from the other standard ones i have
seen.
