Spitfire
Airframe part 12* (Pg 4 Airframe )
Original
Spitfire part.
Part number 351 = Spitfire MK VIII 20 = Bottom Elevators
Work began on redesigning the Spitfire airframe to take the
new heavier more powerful engine. This work would produce
the pressurised MK VIII and the unpressurised Mk VIII
Spitfires. These aircraft were expected to be the answer to
the FW 190. In the event the interim MK IX performed that
function. This version used a Mk V fuselage with as few
changes as possible, and entered front line service in July
1942, nearly a year before the Mk VIII.
Shown above the Spitfire MK VIII in RAAF markings.
The Mk VIII (and VII) featured a strengthened fuselage with
a retractable tail wheel. Each wing carried a 14-gallon self
sealing fuel tank, and the main fuselage fuel tank was
increased in size to 96 gallons. These changes gave the Mk
VIII the same range as the Mk V, although as this distance
was achieved at a higher speed, the Mk VIII could stay in
the air for less time than the Mk V. Most Mk VIIIs used a
new broad-chord, or pointed-tip rudder. It also featured a
new tropical filter – the Vokes Aero-Vee – that was so well
designed it was installed on all Mk VIIIs and adapted for
tme Mk IX. The Mk VIII used the “c” wing armament (four
cannon or two cannon and two machine guns) and could carry
up to 1,000lbs of bombs.
A Mk VIII was the first Spitfire to use the revised cockpit
seen on most later models, with a cut-down rear fuselage and
a bubble canopy. This design improved the rearwards
visibility of the aircraft, and was used in late production
Mk IXs, the very similar Mk XVI and the late Mk 20 and
above.
1,657 Mk VIIIs were produced in all, so although it never
replaced the MK IX in Britain and Northern Europe it was
still a major version of the Spitfire.

BF 108 Nord Cowling (Pg 4 Airframe )
Original
front cowling
for the BF 108 Nord
Conceived as a competitive aircraft the Bf 108 would take
part in the 1936 Berlin Olympics.
Following this the type
would serve with the Luftwaffe during the Second World War.
Ironically the Messerschmitt Bf 108 would also serve with
the Royal Air Force at the same time under the name Aldon.
Post World War 2 Les Mureaux continued
production of the type under a new designation of Nord 1000
Pingouin series and a further two variants of the type were
produced. The 1001 Pingouin I which was powered by the
240-hp Renault 60-10 engine and the 1002 Pingouin II which
was powered by a Renault 60-11 engine.
In total 885 Bf 108s were produced with 250
built post-war bringing total production to 1,170.
During the making of the Battle of Britain
film in 1969 BF 109s were in short supply the the BF 108 was
used in several of the flying action shots.

PRU Spitfire Camera brackets (pg1 air)
Part Number
365= Mk XI PRU Spitfire shown above.
The PRU Spitfires were fitted
with two vertical telephoto cameras installed behind the
pilots cockpit. Photographs were taken through apertures in
the floor of the fuselage. The cameras were accessible
through hinged panels on port and starboard sides.
Additionally, an oblique camera was mounted to obtain photos
through the side of the fuselage, aimed by the pilot using a
sighting line on the port wing tip.
Combining height with speed,
the reconnaissance Spitfires were able to elude most
attempts at interception by the enemy. The technical quality
of their cameras enabled them to operate at high altitudes
without sacrificing the quality of the photographs obtained.
Here we have a
super rare pair of Camera brackets which hold the camera in
place in a MK XI PRU Spitfire, they are in very nice
condition with no rot or damage.
Above left you can see the brackets
in situ.
