In early 1937 the RCAF wanted a general
reconnaissance aircraft and, in accordance with Canadian
policy, looked to Britain for its supply. The Bristol 142M
Blenheim was being tested primarily as a bomber; the
Bolingbroke, an improved Blenheim, was being designed as an
interim replacement for the Avro Anson reconnaissance
aircraft. The Blenheim was ruled out because of its poor
visibility. This narrowed the choice to the Bolingbroke
The Bolingbroke was of all-metal,
stressed-skin construction. It carried a crew of four and
had one fixed 0.303 Browning machine-gun firing forward and
a flexible 0.303 Browning firing aft. It carried up to 1,000
lb (454 kg) of bombs.

centre the Lancaster flight engineers panel from
official Airminsirty notes.
Here is a superb Lancaster
Flight engineers panel. Using this panel the Lancasters
flight engineer would monitor the engines and control the
use of fuel from various tanks to maintain the aircraft in
trim.
The actual panel is a
aluminium reproduction and is complete with all switches and
instruments.
The fuel cocks are
accurate reproductions of the
originals which simply do not exist and are not
available.
The wheels rotate but there
are no valves attached and they are for display only.
There are no fuel gauges
included as the Lancaster did have variations and will allow
you to customise the panel to your own requirements. There
is some very slight damage to the top LHS of the panel with
a small amount of paint loss.

Mk IX Spitfire
instrument panel (pg21 Instruments)
The German Focke-Wulf FW
190 single-seat fighter appeared suddenly and in large
numbers in the skies over Northern France during the summer
of 1941. Britain scrambled to create an airplane equal to
this powerful, agile, high-altitude adversary. The Mk VIII,
a much-refined version of the Mk V, was only in the early
stages of production, and it was put on hold. Instead, as a
temporary stop gap measure beginning in 1942, Vickers fitted
Spitfire Mk Vs with a larger Rolls-Royce Merlin engine, a
two-stage supercharger, intercooler, and a four-bladed
propeller. This stopgap Spitfire, the Mk IX, actually stayed
in production through 1944, and was produced in much larger
numbers (5,665) than the Mk VIII (1,658). There were three
versions of the Mk IX: the LF (low-altitude) had a clipped
wing; the F was the standard fighter version; and the HF
(high-altitude) had extended wings and a pressurized
cockpit.
Mk IX Spitfire panel
complete with supercharger plate.
This panel is
supplied as standard with the later Square type oxy
regulator.

Repro flap valve for Spitfire panel
NEW FOR 2017 (pg2 cont)
These reproduction flap
levers have been a long time coming. They are a vast
improvement over the cast alloy ones we had previously.
They are perfect copies of
the visible section of the flap valve and are completely
machined from steel by hand.
They contain a piston and a
spring so that they snap crisply up and down as in the
original. I am confident there is not another reproduction
of this quality currently being produced.
They have a nice heavy feel
to them and will complete your Spitfire panel to the highest
standard.

Original C47 Dakota Panels and labels (pg 21 ins)
Click on the
picture below to enlarge. C 47 Cockpit
The American built Douglas
C- 47 Dakota was adapted from the DC-3 Dakota commercial
airliner. It was named the Douglas C-47 Skytrain by the US
Army, designated the R4D by the USN, and was commonly
referred to as "Gooney Bird" by
American troops.
It was one of the
most successful aircraft designed and built, and had great
longevity. The last C-47 was retired
from the American Air Force in 1975. The type was
praised by Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower
amongst the most important instruments of victory in WWII.
More than 13,300 of the DC-3 and C-47s in all its forms were
built - this included Japanese and Soviet production.
Prime use of this
aircraft was for transport, but
also for reconnaissance or even
as gunship's by the Americans.
It was commonly used to carry personnel and cargo,
tow gliders (usually one Waco
CG-4A), and drop paratroopers. The need to take supplies
over the Himalayas led to the C-47B version with higher horsepower engines. Among the
unusual variants of the C-47 was one where the engines were
removed and it was converted into a glider and another that
was equipped with floats.
Only two Dakota
IV saw service with the Fleet Air Arm in WW2, although the
type was in service with the FAA later in 1945 and into
1946. FD904 served with 782 Northern Communication Squadron
in 1944, which linked the Scottish RN air stations with
Lee-on-Solent. At the Fleet Air Arm station at Wingfield in
South Africa, 789 squadron, a Fleet Requirements Unit,
possessed one Dakota from February 1945 until it disbanded
in November 1945, when the aircraft was transferred to 799
squadron at Wingfield.

All the following data plates came
from a single collection. These were collected back in the 1950's and 60s and
the chap would collected them had the foresight to record the aircraft serial
numbers he removed them from. The majority came from Ireland. |

Original plate 8 (Page 21 Ins)
This is a really rare plate from
a Hamilcar glider RR993.
The GAL.49 Hamilcar was a heavy-lift
assault glider designed to carry up to 60 troops, a 7-ton Tetrarch IV light tank
(or similar light vehicles) or cargo loads up to 17,500 lb. Produced mainly from
spruce and birch with a fabric-covered surfaces, it had a staggering all-up
weight of 37,000 lbs. It was created in sections for easy transport and
assembly although due to its net un laden weight of 19,500 lbs, it required
large and powerful tow-aircraft to get it airborne,
It was designed against Specification
X.27/40, with the prototype (DP206) being flown for the first time at Snaith on
27th March 1942.
Initially designed with a jettisonable
undercarriage, this was replaced when it was discovered that it had a far
shorter stopping distance when fitted with skids, Those aircraft employed in
ferry operations did however have a fixed undercarriage to reduce damage.
Vehicles were loaded through the hinged
nose of the aircraft which could be quickly swung open after landing to allow
rapid unloading. The undercarriage oleos were also collapsed so that vehicles
could drive straight out without requiring any form of ramp.

Picture one far left is the
quality inspection stamp which would have been applied at
the factory it was made in. The centre is the BFP. Right is
the reference number of the panel. 6A/760.
I purchased this from an auction
and was told it was removed from a Spitfire however this is
only hearsay. The first step to identify which aircraft this
was used in is the ASI (Airspeed indicator) The 400 MPH
fitted to this panel was only used in Spitfires from MK I to
MK V. It was also used in all Mk's of Hurricane. I then
checked the dates of the instruments. The ASI is dated 1943.
Top left The artificial horizon is dated 1943 top centre.
The climb and descend is dated 1942 top right.
The altimeter bottom left is
dated 1940. The directional indicator centre bottom is dated
1940. The Turn and slip bottom right is undated but is an
early white faced version.
The ASI reference number is
6A/583 again this was fitted to both Spitfire MK I to V and
all Hurricanes. The dates are a mixed bag but what we can
say is that was either fitted to a Spitfire up to MK V or a
Hurricane. To my mind the most likely scenario is that this
was fitted to a MK I/II Spitfire or a Hurricane. The reason
I come to this conclusion is that there are two instruments
possibly three that date from 1940, At the time all
instruments were in short supply and its extremely unlikely
they would have sat on a shelf and been fitted to a MK V
Spitfire or later built Hurricane in 1942/3. The most likely
explanation to me is that the later instruments were
replacements for faulty or damaged units in the panel.
If my theory is correct and this
is the most likely scenario its perfectly feasible that this
panel was in use during the Battle of Britain in a Spitfire
or a Hurricane albeit with two or three of the earlier dated
instrument's. As to whether it was used in a Hurricane we
can only rely on the original owners assertion that it came
from a Spitfire.
The most likely thing to ID it's
specific use would be the inspection stamp which almost
always related to a factory. So far I have been unable to
identify the factory stamp. The Castle Bromwich Stamp where
Spitfires were produced from is CBAF. The first
Spitfire was produced at Castle Bromwich in June 1940 and to
my mind if this was from a MK V Spitfire it would carry a
stamp with CBAF.

Above the MK XVI
Spitfire
The Spitfire XVI was the last major version
of the Spitfire to be powered by the Rolls-Royce Merlin
before introduction of the RR Griffon powered variants.
Externally similar to the Mk. IX, it was powered by the US
licence-built Packard Merlin 266 and was flown with both
normal and clipped wings. Later production examples featured
a cut-down rear fuselage with a sliding bubble canopy to
improve the pilots' view. Total production of the type was
1,054, entering service in November 1944 and remaining in
production until August 1945, the last month of the war. It
was used as a fighter bomber against V2 rocket sites and
airfields in the closing months of the European war, and a
handful remained in RAF service until the mid-1950s. |
